From Cute Critters to Flashy Foil: Easy Easter Egg Decorating Ideas

Happy Spring! Today I’m sharing my Easter eggs I made this year in a late night egg dyeing and decorating session the evening before Easter with my Mom. Because Easter weekend was busy with Fairyville and family Easter activities, I kept my eggs pretty simple this year and didn’t go overboard with techniques. I added stickers to a lot of the eggs, my favorite way to decorate dyed eggs quickly. I tried a few new metallic effects, and also used a super cute Easter Animals egg decorating kit by Paper Source to make some fast and adorable Easter egg designs. I also made a few unicorn eggs like I made last year plus some unicorn sticker eggs. See this blog post for complete details on the unicorn eggs plus my other designs from last year: galaxy eggs, an underwater scene, and striped eggs created with the Eggmazing egg decorator.

My favorite dye tablets are by Paas because they produce rich, vibrant colors and consistently work the best. Paas kits are really reasonable too – around $3 and under – so I usually pick up more than one for Easter egg dyeing and decorating, especially since I dye nearly four dozen eggs. I look for the Paas kits that come with nine different dye colors to have the most variety in hues, plus I’ll use additional dye tablets from another Paas kit too so I can dye several eggs at once and speed up the process. My mom and I use dye cups saved from previous years for the dye baths. To dry the eggs quickly after dyeing them, we put them on cardboard rings cut from empty paper towel and toilet paper holders for maximum air circulation.

I used a wax crayon to write my name on my egg before dyeing it pink. (I also made name eggs for my mom and dad.) The other two pink eggs shown are in memory of my sweet cat Flurry who passed away this month. Stickers were used on the fun butterflies and hashtag Easter eggs.

I added metallic accents to five of the eggs after dyeing them and letting them dry. For the red, yellow and blue eggs, I used gold dispersion which came with the Paas 9 in 1 Color & Crating Kit. I added a few drops of the gold dispersion to a small plastic bag which also came with the kit, then dropped in an egg. I crinkled the bag around all over the surface of the egg to rub gold highlights on it. Really fast and easy! I would make these again.

The foil eggs took a little longer. Using a glue pen that came with the Paas 9 in 1 Color & Crating Kit, a few drops of glue were added to the colored eggs then spread over the egg’s surface with my fingers until a thin coating of glue covered the entire egg. The glue soon became tacky after tapping the surface of the egg repeatedly with my fingers. Once tacky, a foil sheet was pressed to the egg, shiny side facing out, to transfer bits of metallic foil to the egg. I kept moving the sheet around to transfer more foil. This took a while to get used to; if the glue was too wet or too dry, the foil wouldn’t transfer. The glue’s perfect state of tackiness for the foil to stick only lasts a couple minutes before drying and then you have to add more glue and repeat the process without ruining the parts you’ve already foiled. The kit came with one gold and one silver foil sheet. I would have liked more foil sheets to experiment with as each sheet only covered one egg. I used gold on the blue egg and silver on the purple egg. I like how these turned out but they took longer to decorate than the other eggs.

Paper Source has really nice Easter egg decorating kits. Since I loved their unicorn kit introduced last year, I made sure to get the Easter Animals egg decorating kit that was new for 2019 and features cute little bunnies, chicks and bees. The kit makes twelve Easter animals. We made six of them and saved the other half for next year. We used yellow dyed eggs for the bees and chicks and just plan white eggs for the rabbits. The animals’ faces are rub-ons that come with the kit, and the arms, ears, stripes and wings are stickers. These were super simple and fast to make and easier than the unicorns.

I love hardboiled eggs so I’ve been enjoying the fruits of my labor by eating them for breakfast or with lunch. Mom also made delicious egg salad sandwiches with some of the eggs we dyed. She also surprised me with homemade banana cream pie the night we decorated eggs when we were all done. Best Mom ever! I’m already looking forward to next year’s decorating session!
