Lazy Daisies of Summer Fairy Garden

What’s your favorite flower? Daisies are mine because they’re such happy flowers, but ask me in April and I might say tulips, lily of the valley in May, or sunflowers when summer starts sliding into fall. There are so many beautiful flowers depending on the season that it’s hard to pick just one. Daisies are definitely my choice though for summer’s best flower. And today is the first official day of summer! I’ve always loved daisies. I used to have them in my backyard and they were one of the things that instantly sold me on my house when I bought it, but they didn’t come back last year for the first time as my ever expanding boxwood shrubs and hostas have crowded them out. Hopefully I’ll plant some in the future so I can enjoy them in my yard again, but for now I’m enjoying daisies on a smaller scale with this dainty little fairy garden featuring miniature mat daisy and Irish moss, which also has small white delicate flowers. Miniature mat daisy (Bellium minutum) is just the cutest. It forms a carpet of light green leaves with small daisies that spring up in late spring and early summer and can tolerate shade and sun as long as the soil is kept moist.

Three daisy flower fairies grace this little garden. The fairy standing near the gate and clutching daisy flowers and a daisy basket is from the Flower Fairies Secret Garden collection and based on Cicely Mary Barker’s charming 1920s Flower Fairies artwork and stories. At the back of the garden is a fairy wearing a flower crown of daisies in her hair and a sweet little ladybug dress, perched on a whimsical daisy chair, where the flower provides a shaded canopy and the leaves a seat on which to rest and enjoy all nature has to offer. On the right side of the garden kneels a sparkly fairy in a turquoise and green dress picking daisies. She was in my Unicorn Dreams fairy garden two years ago and I was happy she did not fade in the sun – or lose her sparkles in a rainstorm!

I’ve used the daisy fence, bird bath and table in three different fairy gardens in past years. New accessories I bought this year for this garden are the daisy baskets and the silver sundial with tiny numerals in the field of Irish moss. I would like to have a life size version of this sundial in my own yard! I was so pleased the standing fairy’s tiny hand was able to hold one of the daisy baskets, since they weren’t purchased together. A white flagstone path finishes the garden, which is in a round shallow planter I’ve used for many fairy gardens throughout the years.

Here’s wishing you a summer filled with all things daisy and not too much crazy!
