For years I’ve been searching for the perfect pumpkin patch. A scenic spot, not too crowded, with a large variety of pumpkins for sale at reasonable prices. The pumpkin patches in and around Indianapolis are geared more towards kids’ activities – like bounce houses, slingshots, and tire climbs – than pumpkin picking. They can be crowded on the weekends and many charge for admission, parking, and activities. Usually I end up getting my pumpkins in Indianapolis at a nice farmer’s market which has a large variety of every kind of pumpkin imaginable. But it’s a little pricy, and despite their pretty pumpkins, a paved parking lot leaves a little to be desired when it comes to visiting a pumpkin patch.
Enter Prices Pumpkin Patch. This hidden gem in Kokomo, Indiana is in their 26th year of business, but I first learned of it five years ago. My friends Lisa and Paula happened upon Prices sunflower fields while out taking photos at the end of August 2013. They shared the most stunning photos of sunflowers on Facebook then returned several more times when the pumpkin patch was open. I was amazed by their gorgeous photos. I had to see this place for myself!
Mom was up for the adventure – and in search of pumpkins for her beautiful bench display she creates each fall – so we headed to Kokomo last Sunday. It’s an hour’s drive from Fishers, but our trek was a little longer due to road construction and an accident in the middle of the work zone. We turned down the drive to the patch and immediately exclaimed “wow” when we saw the beautiful farm house decked out in pumpkins and fall décor that lay before us, with pumpkins and fall displays surrounding it everywhere we looked. We started looking at the pumpkins for sale and when we realized how reasonable they were, we grabbed one of the huge wagons because we knew we were going to fill it up between us! Most of the pumpkins were marked individually with prices, while some were grouped together by price. We loved how there were so many options to choose from. Pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and varieties were available to purchase, all surrounding the cutest little displays in such an idyllic setting. It wasn’t crowded at all and we took our time exploring, pumpkin picking and photographing. There were also mums for sale and a craft tent where you could purchase painted pumpkins and gourds, ornaments, and other fall decorations. If I lived closer, I’d go back again before month’s end! The Price family was very welcoming and warm, and you can tell the pumpkin patch is a labor of love. The sign on the fence that said “Memories Made Here” sums up the place perfectly!
I can tell Prices Pumpkin Patch is going to be a new tradition for us. I’m hoping to return in August or September next year to check out the sunflowers too. They said their sunflowers started blooming at the end of July this year and continued through the end of September until heavy rains set in. They plant varieties with different bloom times to extend the season. Sunflowers are $1 each and you can pick out the ones you want to purchase.
Prices is located at 3020 W. Jefferson St. in Kokomo, Indiana and open seven days a week from 10 AM – 7 PM during the fall season. (This year the pumpkin patch opened on September 15.) There is no admission charge. Check out their Facebook page for updates on sunflower and pumpkin availability, dates and hours. Bring cash or your checkbook as they do not accept credit cards.
